Changing a navy or dark grey wall to off-white starts with assessing the existing paint, approving the new colour and selecting a suitable preparation and coverage system. A colour name alone does not explain how an even finish will be achieved.

Define the change
Identify one wall or the whole room, retained curtains, flooring and wood finishes. Send overall and close-up photographs, the existing and proposed colours, and any original product information. Point out repairs or uneven areas.
- Is the wall one colour or does it have stripes or artwork?
- Are returns around doors and windows included?
- Will lighting or furniture change?
- Will a feature wall remain or will the room have one palette?
Choose primer as part of the system
Benjamin Moore’s primer guidance identifies major colour changes as a reason to consider suitable primer, alongside the substrate and existing coating. A white primer is not automatically the right product.
Read the instructions and limitations of paint-and-primer products. The manufacturer’s self-priming guidance discusses differences between surfaces and colours; the label does not guarantee that every dark shade disappears in one coat.
Approve an on-site sample
Compare two or three shades beside the floor, curtains and kitchen fronts in an open-plan room. Record the approved product, colour code and sheen. Clarify whether the sample represents the full proposed finish or only the colour. Have the people responsible for approval review it before the full room is painted.
Record the work
Specify walls, preparation, primer and topcoat system and approved colour. Agree how any additional treatment revealed during work will be approved.
Common questions
Can a photograph establish the number of coats?
A photograph helps describe the request but cannot support an exact coverage promise. Coats depend on the product, colours, preparation and manufacturer instructions, with coverage reviewed on the wall.
Must the ceiling change too?
No. State whether it retains its colour and agree the junction detail so ceiling painting is not assumed.
Send Almusaileem your area, wall photographs, approximate dimensions and intended shade. Supply and installation are priced after reviewing condition and scope.
