Estimate paint in litres by multiplying the net wall area by the number of coats, then dividing by the product’s coverage per litre per coat. Review the result with the contractor for surface condition, expected losses and available tin sizes. Room floor area alone is not enough.
Use a tape measure and a written calculation to understand quantities in a Kuwait house-painting quotation, rather than relying on “one tin per room”.
Measure the walls included in the work
Multiply each wall’s paintable width by its height, then add the areas. For a rectangular room with walls of equal height, use total wall length × height. Measure projections, sloping walls and other different sections separately. Exclude fixed cladding outside the painting scope.
For material estimation, deduct doors and windows not being painted with the same product and add opening reveals where included. This estimates materials; how labour areas are measured in the quotation needs a separate agreement. See house-painting costs and quotation comparisons.
Use the actual product’s coverage rate
Find coverage in square metres per litre and confirm whether it is per coat. Do not use another product’s figure just because the manufacturer is the same. The Dulux paint-quantity guide explains measuring surfaces, deducting openings, allowing for coats and dividing by the selected paint’s coverage.
Some data sheets give a range. For example, the Jotun Fenomastic My Home Rich Matt technical data sheet, product code 29600, gives theoretical coverage of 7.3–13.3 m² per litre per coat, related to coat thickness, texture, porosity, losses and other factors. Do not automatically choose the highest coverage to reduce the quantity.
This is an example of reading a data sheet, not a universal coverage rate for Kuwait. Obtain the sheet matching the locally supplied container and ask the contractor to explain the rate used.
Worked example: two coats on room walls
Assume a room 4 m long and 3 m wide, with walls 2.8 m high, a door of 1.8 m² and a window of 1.8 m². This example excludes the ceiling and opening reveals:
- Total wall length: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14 m.
- Gross wall area: 14 × 2.8 = 39.2 m².
- Net wall area: 39.2 − 1.8 − 1.8 = 35.6 m².
- For arithmetic illustration only, assume two coats and coverage of 10 m² per litre per coat.
- Basic quantity: 35.6 × 2 ÷ 10 = 7.12 litres.
This is before reviewing losses and tin sizes. The assumed rate of 10 is not a product-performance promise. At a rate of 8 for the same area and coat count, the estimate becomes 8.9 litres. Knowing the coverage rate matters more than memorising a tin count per room.
Separate ceilings, colours and primer
Calculate each combination of product, colour and sheen separately. The example room’s ceiling is 12 m²; if included, calculate it using its own paint and coat count. Calculate a differently coloured wall separately and deduct it from the main colour’s area.
Calculate primer and finish paint from their respective data sheets. Do not add primer litres to finish paint as if they were one material. Putty has its own product-specific consumption rate and unit. Read primer and putty before painting when discussing the material sequence.
Who sets coat counts and additional quantities?
Use the specified product system, surface condition and approved result. The cited Jotun sheet describes two finish coats in its recommended system and allows other systems for different uses. That does not establish two coats for every product. Do not omit a coat simply to fit the tins already available.
For a strong existing colour or major change, discuss preparation and coverage on a sample before confirming quantities. See changing a wall from dark to light.
Ask whether expected losses are already included so you do not add a reserve twice. Discuss actual project needs rather than applying one percentage to every house, then round to available pack sizes. Extra dilution is not a substitute for sufficient paint; follow product instructions.
Check before ordering tins
- Net area for each product and colour, with ceilings and extra sections separated.
- Product name and code, approved colour and sheen.
- Coat count and coverage rate used in the calculation.
- Primer quantities separate from finish paint.
- Loss allowances, tin sizes and final total in litres.
- Revised quantities if the product or scope changes after inspection.
For Almusaileem Paints & Decor, send room dimensions, wall heights and photos, the number of colours and whether ceilings are included. This helps assess scope and quantities before ordering. Enquiries: 56510526.
